Ways to manage a classroom in a respectful manner without singling out a student can be by creating a routine at the very start of the year to make sure the teacher and the students are all on the same page for classroom rules, expectations, and etiquette. Teachers can make classroom management student centred is by having the class at the start of the year fill out a classroom contract. For the classroom contract, have the whole class circle some answers for questions on their learning style, and how they learn best. On the classroom contract have students write down short answers for ways their teacher can help support their learning. Throughout the school year have check-ins and ask the students what can be done to further improve lessons. Where everyone agrees on what their expectations are for the entire year and the commit and show respect to these expectations by following though on their agreement. Next, teachers should establish an attention grabber so then student know when to be quiet and listen to instructions. Such attention grabbers can be the teacher raising their hand while standing at the front of the classroom, ringing a bell or a chime, a call and response chant, or a hand clapping pattern that students copy. Another foolproof strategy teachers can do is stop poor behaviour in advance before it escalates in that moment as well as over the course of weeks to months. Next, it always works to give students specific compliments to their work instead of just “good job” since this helps students want to improve in school by giving them intrinsic motivation. Lastly, it’s also important for teachers to make sure that students are prepared to learn at school by making sure they have something to eat. Students can have food via breakfast programs, lunch programs, and fruit and vegetable programs that are ran throughout the school year.
